On Wednesday, the Polygon network was down for just over an hour due to a validator-related bug in its Heimdall layer. The problem was that a validator left the network, which caused the consensus mechanism to fail. While the Bor layer — which is in charge of block production — was still working, the Heimdall issue impacted consensus and the coordination of the validators.

The Polygon Foundation states that the problem was discovered at around 10:00 am ET and was completely fixed by 11:01 am ET after the engineers installed the solution. Even Bor was functioning normally and blocks were still being created, there were still a lot of users that said they had dApps interaction problem due to RPC access, so the team is still trying to fix this with third parties.

The event actually congregated Polygon’s recent Heimdall that was upgraded on July 10, when CometBFT and Cosmos SDK v0.50 have been deployed. The new work was hailed as the most challenging fork since 2020. Its goal was to boost the chances of the network finality and scalability. Nevertheless, this unpredicted fault has caused some doubts concerning the change’s sustainability and Polygon’s capacity amidst the increase of Layer 2.

During the disruption, Polymarket — a leading blockchain-based prediction platform operating on Polygon — briefly displayed service errors, indicating the impact on user-facing services. Despite these issues, core network operations were not interrupted, and developers acted quickly to isolate and address the problem.

Polygon, once a dominant force among Ethereum scaling solutions, has faced increased pressure as newer Layer 2 networks gain traction. With over $1.1 billion in total value locked, the network still holds significant weight in the ecosystem, but reliability concerns may affect its momentum.

As of the latest reports, the POL token is trading at $0.22, down by approximately 1.77% for the day. The team assures users that services are being restored and long-term stability remains a top priority.
